Official Position Statement
At Cascade Beagle Rescue, we dedicate our work to protecting beagles and giving them a voice. We stand firmly against the use of dogs—and especially beagles—in laboratory research and safety testing.
Beagles are commonly used in research in part because of their gentle, trusting, and compliant nature. Tragically, the very qualities that make them beloved companions also make them easier to handle in laboratory settings, where they may endure invasive procedures, toxicity testing, confinement, and significant distress.
Why We Oppose the Use of Beagles in Research
- Their trust should not be exploited. Beagles are gentle, social dogs who naturally seek human interaction. Those qualities should never be used to make experimentation easier.
- Dogs deserve lives beyond laboratory cages. Beagles need companionship, enrichment, exercise, sunlight, comfort, and the opportunity to experience the world outside a laboratory.
- We support the advancement of non-animal research methods. Human-relevant approaches—including human cell and tissue models, organ-on-chip technologies, and computational methods—offer important opportunities to reduce and ultimately replace the use of animals in research.
No dog should spend its life as a laboratory test subject.
Cascade Beagle Rescue calls for an end to the breeding and use of beagles for experimentation and supports the release of surviving dogs to qualified rescue organizations whenever possible, giving them the opportunity to experience what every beagle deserves: safety, kindness, freedom, and a loving home.
Stand With Us
Every beagle we pull from a laboratory, a shelter, or a breeding facility is placed with a foster family and given the time, veterinary care, and patience they need to become somebody’s dog. That work is funded entirely by donations.
