Rocky's Story
In late April, we got
a call from a wonderful, loving family telling the plight of a
beagle puppy they had. This little beagle, who they named
"Rocky", had a deformed leg. They took him to their
vet for x-rays and evaluation. They even went the extra mile
and had him seen by an orthopedic specialist. When they got
the news that it would cost around $6,000 to repair his leg, they
knew this would be a family hardship. Even if they did have
the funds, the extensive rehabilitation would be more than they
could manage. You see, this family is comprised of people
with disabilities ranging from brittle bone disease to cerebral
palsy. They were looking for a dog that their disabled
children could love and care for, but they want the best for Rocky
so they contacted CBR. Although it was hard for them to
relinquish their pet, they selflessly turned him over to us on May
2, knowing he would receive the care he so desperately needs.
He is a very smart
boy who is already learning to 'sit' after one day at his foster
mom, Jane's house! He loves to cuddle and play, but is
mischievous like any normal beagle puppy! We are embarking on a
fundraising campaign over the next two months to raise enough
money to help Rocky regain full use of his leg. We will be
reviewing the x-rays with our own veterinary team soon to
determine the extent of his needed surgery and rehabilitation.
We feel he will probably require an external fixator device (rods,
pins, plates) as his bones will need to be fractured and then
realigned. Post surgery, he will need constant care and more
than likely rehabilitation/physical therapy.
This is a big
order, but we think he's worth it! We can't do it alone so
we're reaching out to our friends and supporters once again for
help. Remember, contributions to CBR and/or
Rocky's Fund are tax deductible! THANK YOU!
NEWSFLASH!!! Rocky was adopted on October 4th! His new
family is in love with him and reports that he is doing very well.
Rocky's new dad, Bill, said, "Rocky is a blank slate...just
waiting for "GOOD DOG" to be written on it." HOORAY for
Rocky!! THANK YOU TO ALL OF HIS SUPPORTERS who were an
integral part of him starting his new life!
Rocky's new family! The adoption was completed at the vet
office where they removed his final cast and put on a temporary
soft cast. Right: Rocky meets his new sibling,
"Pepper".

UPDATE:
8/8/07 - Rocky
had his surgery today at the OSU Vet School for a
reduced rate! He tolerated the surgery very well and will
probably be discharged tomorrow. They said his ulna
was fractured right at the growth plate, but the bone next to it
and the ligaments and other soft tissue continued to grow which is
why his leg bends out at a 90 degree angle. The surgery involves
cutting away bone to allow the leg to flex and reconnect
everything with plates, rods and an external fixator (hardware).
He will need to be confined for six weeks while his bones heal so
keep him in your thoughts. To top things off, he was
neutered today too. Watch here for more updates on his
progress.
UPDATE: 8/9/07:
The vets are having a hard time managing Rocky's pain. They
had hoped to have him on oral pain meds by now bun due to his pain
level they were unable to and have to leave him on IV pain meds.
They switched the medication to something stronger to help him
through this difficult time. He will remain hospitalized
until he is able to come off the IV; they are guessing by
Saturday. Please keep him in your thoughts during this time.
UPDATE: 8/11/07:
Rocky was released from the hospital today! The ride home
was a little shakey as he got sick to his stomach several
times...poor guy. It's an hour and a half journey. We
got the instructions from the vet that he is to be on complete
crate rest with only 3 five to ten minute potty breaks a day.
We are to keep him on a very short lead and not let him walk out
to potty...he gets to be carried! Being a six month old puppy,
it's hard for him to just lie around all day, but thankfully he
has some good meds to help. He does seem painful but his
pain level is being managed by round the clock medication.
See today's pictures below. Notice how he still finds it in
himself to want to play with a leaf!
Rocky holds
his leg up when it needs a rest. He does get around, but he
often falls while bearing weight on his leg.
