Can you help "Jersey"?

PORTLAND, OR 11/9/06: CBR took a special
case today. A 5 year old lemon & white beagle named "Jersey"
came to us with a fractured hind leg and torn ligaments. He also
has a severe condition on all 4 feet that is being diagnosed by our
specialists. Jersey's leg has been evaluated by our vets and has
now been referred to an orthopedic surgeon. He fractured his leg
more than 2 weeks ago but nobody cared enough to help him.
This dog is about as sweet as they come and has a great prognosis, but
he needs YOU. His surgery and post-op rehabilitation will be
expensive, but we know he's worth it! Please consider helping this sweet guy today.
If you are unable to make a donation, please keep him in your thoughts
as he begins his new life in the care of CBR. HELP JERSEY HAVE A
NEW START ON LIFE!

Progress Notes on Jersey:
11/10/06 Update:
Jersey is scheduled for surgery tomorrow which
will be performed by Dr. Lozier of NW Veterinary Specialists in
Portland, OR. His leg is fractured in 2 places; one is in the
ankle joint. Several ligaments are also torn. The surgery will
involve metal plates and bone grafts. The estimated cost of
surgery is $5,000. He will be in a cast for 8-10 weeks and may
need rehabilitation. Jersey made a lasting impression on the
vets with his sweetness and the courage he demonstrated during his
exam. They feel that his feet are infected and have
pustules due to a food allergy or other skin allergies. They are
starting treatment for this today. This is a very severe
condition that needs immediate attention. |
11/11/06 UPDATE:
Jersey's surgery is scheduled for approximately 1:00 PM, PST and is
estimated to last 5 hours. Please keep him in your thoughts.
Watch for a post-op update later this evening. POST OP
REPORT: After 5 hours of intense surgery, Jersey is finally
out of anesthesia and waking up. Dr. Lozier said it was a
complicated fracture and several bone grafts were installed into areas
in the fractured joint. He had to take bone sections from
Jersey's hip to use in his leg. He has a metal device with pins
and rods that go through each of the toe bones (metatarsals) through
the ankle joint and above the ankle. Although Jersey's pain is
being controlled by IV meds, when we visited, he was trembling with
pain. His leg/foot is swollen to 4 times its size so it has a
pressure bandage on it. Below are the pictures from tonight's
visit.
11/12/06:
Jersey
is doing well, but had to remain in the hospital another day due to
severe swelling of his leg. They are soaking all 4 paws trying
to relieve the pain and infection. Jersey's spirit is strong and
he offers the staff kisses. CBR Volunteers delivered a sign to
the hospital to be hooked onto his hospital kennel that says "My Name
is Jersey. I am loved by CBR!" . He is scheduled to be
released tomorrow. Keep watching for updates!
11/14/06:
Sweet Jersey is learning to hop on 3 legs to go potty. He still
cries out in pain but settles down if we sit and hold his head.
He looks up as if to say "that's all I needed..just hold me and I'll
be ok." He seems to still have quite a bit of swelling &
soreness. Tomorrow he goes for a bandage change. New pics
below.
11/15/06: Today they changed his
bandages. Pictured below is the hardware that was encased in the
bandages and wrap. Jersey was quite painful during this
appointment but he still found it in his heart to kiss the techs.
11/21/06:
Jersey continues to improve but will not bear
weight on his injured leg. He seems to be tolerating the pain
under the compassionate watch of his fosters Jann & Amber. He is
described as "such a sweet, wonderful guy." His next vet
appointment, barring complications, is set for December 14th, when he
will have xrays. His hip, the site of the bone harvest for
grafts, is sore and swollen, but his spirits are good. He offers
kisses often. His diet has been switched and his paws seem
to be a bit better. It's amazing what a little loving care can
do!
11/26/06: Over Thanksgiving,
our sweet boy was a gem. He seems to understand that he is being
cared for, although his leg is bothering him, he greets visitors with
kisses. For the past couple of days he has been trying to begin
to bear a little weight on his leg, but only baby steps at this point.
He will still need another surgery, eventually, to remove the
hardware. He will then need to learn to walk normally again.
Watch for new pictures soon!
12/4/06:
Today is our Pictures with Santa event and what a surprise when
Jersey's foster mom showed up with him! Apparently Jersey had left a note
for her that he just had to have a meeting with Santa. What did
he wish for? Warmth, love and affection for every homeless
beagle on earth. He said he feels pretty lucky that so many
people cared enough to help him with his surgery! He still has
one more operation to go and some therapy. He is doing
better every day. One more thing he whispered into Santa's
ear...."If you happen to find an empty heart and home on Christmas
Eve, please tell them I would be happy to fill the void!"
1/3/07:
Follow-up vet appointment today included xrays.
While some parts of these tiny bones are weaving back together, there
are some that are not. Little Jersey will have to wait another 4
weeks for a recheck and hopefully the bones will be further along.
It is possible that his hardware could be ready to come out on
Valentine's Day! Please continue to keep paws crossed! Jersey
thanks all of you immensely for your support!! He has an
appointment with a vet Allergy Specialist on 1/24/06 to consult on the
swelling, itching feet. Watch for updates on this!
1/24/07:
The Allergy Specialist cultured Jersey's feet and
discovered that he has staph, strep, and yeast infections going
on..poor baby. No wonder he is so miserable. Several
prescriptions were given and a whole regimen of bathing, drops, meds
were laid out. His wonderful fosters, Joanne and Jim, are
taking such wonderful care of him and are actually falling in love
with him....could there be an adoption on the horizon???? On
Valentine's Day, he has a recheck with both the orthopedic surgeon and
the allergist...please keep paws crossed that his bones are finally
healing properly!!
